When Did Music Stop Being Good?

dd

I remember a time in my life, where I never even listened to music. It was just there, and I didn’t really have any interest in it. I was quite the little outcast. One day, that all changed.

The year was 2002, and I had one of my “firsts”. First Kiss? Nope! First Beer? Nope! First Anal Fisting? ….Nope…

FIRST ALBUM! Yes, as heartbreaking as it is to admit, the first album I ever purchased was the soundtrack to the first Spider-Man movie. In my defense…I was ten. To me, this was “The Black Album”, this was “IV”, it was my musical cherry being popped, and as a ten year old being introduced to music, the record wasn’t so bad. It had a little R&B, a ton of Rock, and a dash of Metal (It had Kerry King…That’s the dash). I was almost overwhelmed, but I stayed strong and wore that CD out. Its safe to say that my first experience with music was a good one.

But I really, really, really wish sometimes that I had stayed musically ignorant… Read more

Music Monday: Autre Ne Veut’s “Anxiety”

R&B is a genre I loved as a kid but one I had long abandoned until recently. With young artists like The Weeknd and Frank Ocean bringing new life to the genre by offering something different. It’s the first time I’ve been excited about the scene since the days of Boyz II Men and Jodeci and other 90′s groups that dominated the charts during my teenage years.

With this new album “Anxiety” by Brooklyn based Autre Ne Veut(Arthur Ashin) my renewed love for the genre has been taken to a whole other level. Besides having no fucking idea how to pronounce this dudes chosen name, I can’t find a thing wrong with this album. From the moment I first listened a week ago I’ve been obsessed and have probably listened to the album beginning to end at least 5-10 times.

Using a mix of synth beats, autotune and a few odd tweeks here and there, Ashin manages to make an album that sounds wholly new and refreshing and like nothing I’ve ever heard before it.

So far this is the album of the year for me and I know it’s early but it’s gonna take something special to put up a fight with this one in 2013.

As always give this one a listen and let me know what you guys think.

Radical 80s! Glory (1989)

An excellent film depicting the brave and historic efforts of an all black regiment fighting in the American Civil War. The above scene is where Denzel Washington gets punished for going AWOL to get some shoes and he takes that shit like a sucka free BAWCE! The good news is he gets to shoot and kill some Confederate crackers later in the movie.
